We say googbye to my last Grandparent - Nanny

Published on 7th December 2024 by Phil Elson

My family and I lost my Nanny last week, she passed away peacefully after years battling dementia. I was her first grandchild and she looked after me and my brother beautifully with Grandad while we were children and my parents were at work. I slipped away from her memory a few years ago.

She was 90 years old, and she's the one person I easily remember her age as she was 50 years older than me. Most would argue 90 is a good long life, and I would agree, but she didn't live till 90, she lived till her early 80s and the last decade was life, but not health. Peter Attia calls this the marginal decade and sadly my Nanny, like many others suffered that period. Nanny was my last Grandparent to go on the great adventure.

My Nanny's passing made me thinking again about why I'm doing this (looking after my health but also working on realigning.health ) - my own health issues started me walking this path, but Nanny's a big reason because, in the back of my mind, I felt that, if I continued the way I was, some kind of neurological dysfunction like Dementia was one station I would probably stop at, and it might still be that I do, but with some basic interventions, hopefully later, years later, spending that time doing the things I love with the people I love.
