Why I needed to Realign my Health

Published on 1st September 2024 by Phil Elson

Historically, my health was robust. As a competitive swimmer in my youth, I maintained an active lifestyle. However, this all changed abruptly in 2019 with a debilitating Achilles tear. It took two years to heal fully, during which time I developed a series of related health issues: Gout, Plantar Fasciitis, Sprained Metatarsals, Muscle Atrophy, and finally Heel Bursitis. The prolonged recovery period contributed to a sedentary lifestyle, which led to weight gain and the disappearance of the active person I once knew.

Gout, often called the disease of kings, has significantly shaped my current journey. It's a familial affliction—my grandfather and father both suffered from it, and alarmingly, I developed it fifteen years earlier than my father did. I knew I had high uric acid levels, but I was unsure of the cause.

Professionally, as an Architect and Software Engineer, root cause analysis forms part of my skillset—I identify issues and solve them within software systems, a process I hoped my doctor would apply to my health. I'm still waiting.

Occasionally I would ponder why we're seeing an increasing prevalence of chronic diseases such as Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), and Dementia. Like many, I've seen friends and family battle these conditions. However, when I began experiencing my own health issues, I noticed that the working pracices of my Dr's didn't seem to cover finding the root causes of conditions; their focus seemed to be on masking the symptoms with medication, which was frustrating!

These experiences have sharpened my focus on achieving health and longevity—not just to extend my life, but to enjoy quality years ahead, ideally exploring nature with my wife. This determination led me to delve into extensive reading and research, propelling me on a journey to understand and address the root causes of health issues and share my finding and progress to help others and is why i've started Realigning Health.
