Nutrition
We exist because our Hunter-Gatherer Ancestors survived on a varied and whole diet whole foods - fruits, nuts, vegetables, legumes and so on. Nutrition is about, ourishing the body with the same whole foods, foods that were around in the time of our Ancestors, applied with common sense.
Nourishing the body is about protecting the liver, feeding the gut, safeguarding the brain by consuming unprocessed foods and drinks that provide our body with the energy and nutrients required for proper functioning, well-being, and longevity.
Our simple rule - eat foods that were around in the time of our Ancestors with a dash of common sense.
Protect the Liver
One of the most important organs in the body, and we only have one. Protecting the liver means protecting it from toxins by focusing on eating whole foods and limiting alcohol. Processed foods and alcohol, among other items, contain added sugars, which are broken down into fructose and glucose. Too much can lead to high uric acid levels, Gout, fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and cancer.
Feed the Gut
Feeding the gut is about dietary fibre from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Fibre acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in our gut, which help break down the foods we eat so our bodies can absorb the nutrients.
Foods that contain live beneficial bacteria, such as yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and other fermented foods, can help us maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
Take a look at:
- The NOVA Food Classification System, it's very useful - as a rule of thumb, avoid group 4.
- The Paleo diet - A diet aligned with our simple rule.
I've cut out 95% of processed food from my diet and my weight fell off, my energy levels increased and my life improved - I wouldn't be writing this without those changes.
